Saffron City (ヤマブキシティ), previously named Saffron City (64), is an unlockable stage in Super Smash Flash 2 that hails from the Pokémon series, specifically the first entries in the series, Pokémon Red and Blue. It was revealed on one of the Beta Content Creator Program's videos.[1]

Layout[]

The moving platforms on Saffron City

The moving platforms.

Saffron City consists of one main platform attached to a small platform above a door. To the right is a narrow platform and to the left are two elevators (moving platforms). Between these and slightly lower than the other platforms is yet another narrow platform. There are many gaps in-between that character and items can fall into, similarly to Fourside. So far, no Pokémon have been seen on the stage as a hazard are absent.

Music[]

  • The main music track is Team Rocket Hideout, a cinematic remix of the theme that plays inside the Team Rocket's secret hideout in Pokémon Red and Blue.
  • The alternate music track is Pokémon City Medley, a rock medley of five remixed songs that play in the cities in Pokémon Red and Blue: Pallet Town, Celadon City, Vermilion City, Lavender Town, and Cinnabar Island.

Tournament Legality[]

This stage is banned in competitive play. It contains a wall that allow for infinites and pits that make recoveries like Ness' difficult or impossible.

Origin[]

Saffron City Pokemon RB

Saffron City as it appears in Pokémon Red and Blue.

In Pokémon Red and Blue, Saffron City is the largest city in the Kanto region, and one of the most pivotal to the game. It is initially blocked off from all sides until a certain amount of progress is made. However, once allowed inside, it contains important locations such as the Silph Co. office building; the site of the main conflict against Team Rocket.

The specific designs of the buildings are a product of artistic license and, in fact, were rendered inconsistent with canon several years after its Super Smash Bros. appearance in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
