Floating

Goku and Peach floating.

Floating is a special ability in Super Smash Flash 2 that can be performed by Peach and Goku. It is performed by jumping and then holding the jump input as the jump ends, allowing the character to temporarily remain suspended in midair. The character can move left and right, as well as use aerial attacks while floating. However, releasing the jump input, air dodging, or using special moves will make the character stop floating.

Characters can start floating up to one time before returning to the ground, and the duration they can float differs with each character. Peach can float for 80 frames, Goku can float for 50 frames, and Kaiō-ken Goku can float for 100 frames.

Currently, no characters in Fraymakers are capable of floating. However, the game's API contains a variable for floating duration, allowing for custom characters to float.

Auto-floating[]

Auto-floating can be performed by pressing down while holding the jump button. It allows characters to start floating before reaching their full jump or midair jump height. It can also be used while falling down to start floating without using their midair jump.

Floating at different heights has varying uses depending upon which height the player chooses. By holding down before jumping, the player can float at ground level, allowing them to effectively use aerial attacks against grounded opponents.

Origin[]

Peach's floating origin

Peach floating in Super Mario Bros. 2.

Peach's ability to float comes from the NES game Super Mario Bros. 2, where she can do so for a few seconds by holding the jump button. It is also a move exclusive to her, and because of this, she could access some shortcuts other characters would be unable to reach. In turn, the ability for Peach to float in this game comes from Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, where the character Lina, whom Peach replaced in the western SMB2, exhibited the same ability.

In the Dragon Ball series, flight is a common technique that allows the user to manipulate their ki, thereby allowing them to levitate or float in the air, as Goku does in SSF2. It is unknown when Goku learned this technique, but it is widely presumed he learned it while he was training with Kami during the three-year gap that followed King Piccolo's defeat at the hands of Goku. He then exhibited this ability for the first time in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament to finish off Piccolo Jr., and he would later use it, alongside the rest of the Z Fighters, as his main way for traveling around the world.
