This article is about Luigi's Fireball variant. For Mario's variant, see Fireball (Mario).

Fireball (ファイアボール, Faiabōru) is Luigi's standard attack in Super Smash Flash and his standard special move in Super Smash Flash 2. In the latter, Luigi's Fireball has been given different traits to tell it apart from Mario's variant.

Overview

Similarly to Mario, Luigi releases a fireball from his hands to burn down opponents. Luigi's Fireball has a light green coloration.

In the original Super Smash Flash, Luigi's Fireball worked exactly the same his brother's: it is not affected by gravity and travels in a straight horizontal line until it disappears out of screen; it is able to strike numerous opponents as a result of this, the distance it covers is also quite ample.

For the reboot, Super Smash Flash 2, Luigi's Fireball now works more akin to its Super Smash Bros. counterparts: Luigi's fireball is unaffected by gravity and goes into a circular motion while moving straight. Like his brother's, the Fireball will wear out, even if does not comes in contact with enemies or walls. Its distance is also reduced.

Origin

Fireballs first appear in the arcade game Mario Bros. as an obstacle to evade by Mario or Luigi. It came in two variants: red and green. a red Fireball moves in random patterns affected by gravity while a green one moves in a straight line from one side to another, unaffected by gravity. However, the first time Luigi is able to shoot Fireballs himself is in the NES game, Super Mario Bros., done after obtaining a Fire Flower, which can be used to take down every enemy in the game (except for the Buzzy Beetle which is resilient to Fireballs). In SSF2, and unlike SSF, Luigi's Fireball attributes seem to be based on the green Fireball obstacle from Mario Bros.. It should also be noted that on its original appearance, a Fireball does not bounce from walls, it immediately disappears after colliding with one, this does not happen in any of the SSF games.
