This article is about Blue's appearance in Super Smash Flash. For general information about the character, see Blue.

Blue is a playable newcomer unlockable character in Super Smash Flash, based on the Sonic fan characters created by Newgrounds user Equinox-Twilight but redesigned by the user topcat13, also known as Topcat, specifically for the game. He is a clone of Blade, differentiated by his greater strength, longer range, and slower speed.

Blue is ranked 21th on the current tier list, placing him in the C tier. In summary, Blue has the same issues as Blade does, but in a less severe manner.

Attributes[]

Blue has similar attributes to Blade concerning his movement speed, jump distance, and size. Similarly to but not as strongly as Blade, Blue has range issues, making him easily outranged by other sword-wielding characters. His up attack and down aerial moves are both very unreliable, just like Blade's, and he still lacks a projectile, which gives him a more difficult time against characters with strong ranged games like Mario and Tails. However, unlike Blade, Blue has stronger attacks with a much longer active duration, allowing him to rack up damage and KO much more easily. Additionally, he can instant-KO opponents with his side attack.

The table below refers to Blue's hard data values.

Moveset[]

Attack Image Description Damage
Neutral attack SSF Blue standard attack Delivers a quick horizontal slash, having a small attack margin. 5%
Side attack SSF Blue side attack Performs a fiery horizontal slash outwards. This is his best instant-KO attack. 7%
Down attack SSF Blue down attack Uses the Spin Dash, curling into a ball and quickly rolling forward, travelling a fixed distance. The move can hit multiple times at low percentages, dealing whopping amounts of damage. 9%
Up attack SSF Blue up attack Slices with his blade while facing upwards. 7%
Down aerial SSF Blue down aerial Slashes midair while facing downwards.
Jump attack SSF Blue jump attack Uses the Spin Jump, which looks similar to his down attack, curling into a ball and slashing with his sword as he spins in the air. 3%

Differences from Blade[]

Attributes[]

  • Nerf Blue's maximum movement speed is slightly lower (20 → 19).
    • Buff This makes him less vulnerable to instant-KOs.
  • Nerf He has a slower 1P pivot (21 → 19).
  • Nerf He has a higher attack cooldown value (12 → 13).
  • Neutral He has a drastically longer attack duration (4 → 15).
    • Buff This makes some attacks' hitboxes last for more time.
    • Buff This also allows Blue to cancel some attacks into others.

Neutral attack[]

  • Buff The move deals more damage per frame (4% → 5%).
  • Neutral It transitions into jump attack 11 frames later when used in the air (5 → 16).
  • Nerf The move's hitbox is around half the length, giving Blue less range and a worse disjoint overall.
  • Neutral The move's hitboxes are more consistent throughout the move.
    • Nerf Blue lacks a disjoint and has wider hurtboxes than Blade during its start.
    • Buff He has a larger disjoint and much thinner hurtboxes than Blade by its end, however.

Side attack[]

  • Neutral Blue does a flaming slash instead of an overhead strike.
  • Buff The move has instakill properties.
  • Nerf The move's hitbox is significantly smaller, giving Blue less range, a worse forwards disjoint, and no upwards disjoint.
  • Neutral Blue's hurtbox is somewhat wider, but also shorter.
  • Nerf Blue has no disjoint during the initial frames of the attack.

Down attack[]

  • Buff The move deals more damage per frame (8% → 9%).
  • Nerf Blue's hurtboxes are much bigger, completely enveloping his hitbox.

Up attack[]

  • Buff The move deals more damage per frame (6% → 7%).
  • Nerf The move's hitbox is around half as tall, giving Blue less range and a worse disjoint overall.
  • Neutral The move's hitboxes are more consistent throughout the move.
    • Nerf Blue lacks a disjoint and has taller hurtboxes than Blade during its start.
    • Buff He has a larger disjoint and much shorter hurtboxes than Blade by its end, however.

Down aerial[]

  • Buff The move deals more damage per frame (6% → 7%).
  • Nerf The move's hitbox is more centered.
    • Nerf This means Blue has overall less range and virtually no downwards disjoint.
    • Buff However, he has a slight forwards disjoint for the entire duration of the attack.
    • Nerf Blue lacks a disjoint and has taller hurtboxes than Blade during the start of the attack.
    • Buff He has a larger disjoint and much shorter hurtboxes by the end of the move, however.

Jump attack[]

  • Buff The move deals more damage per frame (2% → 3%).
  • Nerf Blue's hurtboxes are much bigger, completely enveloping his hitbox.

Other animations[]

  • Nerf Blue's standing hurtbox is slightly taller and twice as wide.
  • Nerf His crouching hurtbox is slightly wider and a bit taller.
  • Nerf His running hurtbox is a bit wider, but very slightly shorter.
  • Nerf His falling and flinching hurtboxes are much bigger.

Trivia[]

  • Blue is one of two fan characters included in the game, the other being his source character, Blade.
  • Blade and Blue have the largest gap between their rankings on the tier list out of all the clone characters, with six places between the two.
