Butter Building (バタービルディング) is a starter stage in Super Smash Flash 2 that hails from the Kirby series, particularly Kirby's Adventure. The stage was made available in Beta 1.3, though it was initially leaked after being found within the files of v0.9b of the demo as a placeholder icon.

Layout[]

Butter Building consists of several floors outside the titular building, each consisting of a large main platform, which is hard for the first floor and soft otherwise, and two sets of smaller platforms leading up to the next floor. The main hazard of the stage is that, after a moment, the stage will endlessly scroll slowly upward, with the top and bottom blast lines being indicated by clouds covering those portions of the screen. This forces players to continuously travel upward while fighting in order to prevent falling behind and being KO'd by the bottom blast line.

With hazards off, in addition to the stage not scrolling upward, the second floor will only consist of one set of platforms in addition to the main platform, and no upper floors can be accessed.

Music[]

  • The main music track is Butter Building, an upbeat remix of the theme that plays in the Butter Building levels in Kirby's Adventure.
  • The alternate music track is Bubbly Clouds, a chiptune remix of the theme of the fourth level, Bubbly Clouds, in Kirby's Dream Land.

Tournament legality[]

This stage is banned in tournament play, because with hazards on the stage endlessly scrolls upward, forcing players to focus on battling the opponent(s) as well as climbing to survive. With hazards off, the platforms that replace the stage scrolling have an uneven layout.

Origin[]

Butter Building Origin

Kirby traversing Butter Building in Kirby's Adventure.

In Kirby's Adventure and its remake Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Butter Building is the third level Kirby has to traverse through in order to repair the Star Rod. It is a large, yellow tower that extends to the sky, and each stage in Butter Building involves Kirby having to travel up the tower in order to progress, with sections on both the inside and the outside.

Its design in SSF2 is heavily inspired from the third and fourth stages of Butter Building in Kirby's Adventure, in which Kirby ascends the outside of the tower by running across the balcony and flying with the Warp Star, respectively. It also resembles the Battle Stage of the same name from Kirby Fighters Deluxe and Kirby Fighters 2, except that the tower is stuck in a perpetual ascent rather than rotation like in the games.
