Blade is a playable newcomer starter character in Super Smash Flash. He is based on the Sonic fan character creations of Newgrounds user, Equinox-Twilight, though he was "redesigned" by another user called topcat13 especifically for the game. He is a Sonic recolor who wields a sword and fights with a variety of quick strikes designed to gradually whittle the opponent down over time.

Blade is ranked 30th on the tier list, tied for last place alongside Pikachu. Blade possesses some of the fastest attacks in the game, which gives him the ability to throw out moves at random without fear of getting punished. His Spin Dash is fast, has good range, racks up damage quickly, and can be used to edgeguard opponents who are recovering low. He also has good survivability due to his momentum-canceling side attack, which allows him to cancel his knockback momentum immediately upon use.

However, his moves deal low damage and have a very short active duration, giving him one of the worst damage outputs in the game. Despite being a sword user, his range is ridiculously bad, which is further compounded by his lack of a projectile, which limits his approach options severely. In particular, his instant-KO attacks: up attack and down attack, are terrible finishing moves due to their lack of range, which requires that Blade's opponent be practically on top of him in order to hit successfully. For these reasons, he has trouble dealing with characters that have better KO power, leading to terrible matchups across the board, thus putting him at the very bottom of the tier list.

Moveset

Attack Description Damage Image
Standard attack Blade delivers a quick horizontal slash; keeping the attack button pressed makes Blade skid a bit forward. 4% SSF Blade standard attack
Side attack Blade slashes vertically, covering a wider area in front of him. It is the only attack of Blade that has a blue blur rather than a gray blur. Despite being a vertical slash, it has more chances of hitting an opponent found behind Blade than his standard attack. 7% SSF Blade side attack
Up attack Blade slashes upwards; as with his standard attack, keeping the attack button pressed makes Blade skid a bit forward. 6% SSF Blade up attack
Down attack Blade uses the Spin Dash; he curls into a ball and propels forward at high speed, travelling a fixed distance, slashing with his sword at the same time as he rolls. Keeping the attack button pressed causes Blade to continuously roll forward, which reduces Blade's damage hitbox window for the moment he is attacking, making him seemingly impervious to many attacks except projectiles. It also offers momentum-canceling properties, which increases Blade's survivability a lot. 8% SSF Blade down attack
Down aerial Blade slashes downwards in the air; unusually but similarly to his standard attack and his up attack, keeping the attack button pressed causes Blade to move a bit forward. 6% SSF Blade down aerial
Jump attack Blade has an additional attack while jumping; Blade uses the Spin Jump, which looks similar to his down attack, curling into a ball and slashing with his sword as he spins in the air. 2% SSF Blade jump attack

Trivia

  • Blade is one of two fan characters included in the game, the other being his clone, Blue.
  • Blade and Pikachu are the only non-clone characters to share a spot on the tier list.
  • Blade was the first character coded into the game, and was its original sole main character. Because of this, he is one of the only two playable characters in the early Super Smash Flash Demo, the other being Samus.
